Uncle John was quite the man! He was short but strong. He took risks, even to the point of riding a minibike! He was a constant reminder of the 50's tough guy.
But he also loved his family: his wife (Rhoda), his children and grandchildren.
He lost his legs to diabetes, but I will always remember his brave approach to life as he learned to walk with his artificial legs. He never let his illness defeat him!

Thank you for posting this, it brings tears to my eyes. I love and miss my Dad very much. I can remeber the day he got his first leg and how proud he was to be walking again. His first leg was a steel rod with the shoe attached and when he came back to my bedroom to show me i said "Lieutenant Dan you got legs." He was not offended by my comment, He smiled and laughed. That's how he was he could find humor in his disability and didn't let it get the best of him. I'm so very proud to of had him as my Father. I love him so very much.
Yes, he was a fine man and the way he approached learning to walk with his new legs was an inspiration. I love it! "Lieutenant Dan you got legs." I can just see you saying that and his response.
Thank you for posting this about dad. It brought tears to my eyes. I can hardly believe that it is almost three years since he has passed away. I rmember the day that Dad walked Lori down the aisle at her wedding on september 9, 2005. He insisted that he walk her from the back of the church to the front by the altar. Lori told him that he only had to walk her the last 3-4 rows. I feel that he was so proud to be able to walk his little girl down the aisle to the man she loves, I know that dad knew that by her marrying Alan that when something happened to him that she would be well taken care of. I miss dad so much and have such respect for how strong willed he was and how he handled all the hardships that he went through the last 10 plus years that he was alive.
